During Sidewalk development process we considered environmental impacts of our decisions at every stage of the product’s lifecycle.
Life Cycle Assessment
The Sidewalk is manufactured in Bradford, UK and in Bergstetten, Germany, by Steelcase. Thanks to the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method, Steelcase can quantify the product’s environmental impacts to set the stage for further improvements. This method, based on ISO 14044, is selected by the European Union for environmental evaluation. It allows us to measure the environmental impact of our products throughout their lifecycle.
Sidewalk Life Cycle
Like all the Steelcase products, Sidewalk contains no hazardous materials (i.e. no Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Chrome VI, or CFC or HCFC in the foam), no dangerous materials such as PVC, and no hazardous flame retardants such as halogenated flame retardants. The packaging consists of 30% recycled cardboard and 30% recycled LDPE film (Low Density Polyethylene). The wood comes from European sustainably
managed forests (FSC and PEFC). The Sidewalk storage table contains 9% recycled materials, by weight. Paper and packaging have prints with water-based inks i.e. without solvent.
Powder-coat painting is VOCfree and free of heavy metals. The manufacturing plant is ISO 14001 certified. All waste is removed by local authority approved contractors.
To reduce shipping, Sidewalk is manufactured close to customers, in Europe and Asia as well as North America. Sidewalk is lightweight. Minimised packaging weight and volume help us improve filling rates and thus require less energy for shipping.
Sidewalk was designed for a long product life, with replaceable legs, glides and armrests. Maintenance information is available on
End of life
Sidewalk is 90% recyclable by weight. The cardboard and LDPE film used for packaging are 100 % recyclable. Sidewalk is designed to ensure our clients environmentally responsible after use strategies for their furniture.
