Steelcase’s cobi chair has been given the prestigious Design Guild Mark Award.
The Design Guild Marks are given by the Furniture Makers Company and recognise and reward excellence in the British design of furniture in volume production. Of the forty designs submitted, cobi was one of only eleven to be recognised by the judges.
Steelcase, the leading global office furniture manufacturer, designed the cobi in partnership with leading British design studio PearsonLloyd. It was released in the UK in 2010 as part of Steelcase’s family of collaborative products.
Jonathan Hindle, Chairman of the Design Guild Mark Judges, explained: “The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers introduced the Design Guild Mark to reward the work of the finest furniture designers working in volume production in Britain and the best of British furniture designers working abroad. The Mark is awarded for excellence in design, use of materials, manufacture and function.”
Tom Lloyd, partner at PearsonLloyd, said: “This is a great honour. Awards like this are important not only because they recognise the big challenge of innovation in the mass production sector of design where ideas can be affected by issues such as market price, but also because they highlight to clients that their investment in design is money well-spent.”
Mark Spragg, Managing Director of Steelcase UK, was thrilled with the announcement. He said: “At Steelcase we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of design and innovation in office furniture design. For one of our chairs to be recognised for just that is a big honour. ‘
PearsonLloyd is a London based design studio working across a wide variety of disciplines including furniture, product, transport and the public realm. The studio was founded by Tom Lloyd and Luke Pearson in 1997.
